Craft room ideas

Hi everybody!
Sorry we have had the dreaded gunk sickness at our house and so my daughters room is going slowly. But I promise it will be completed soon.

Meanwhile I have been looking at some ideas to decorate and clean up the craft room. Remember this?

Board and Batton update #1

Hi All,
I thought I would show you some pictures of the project I'm doing in my daughter's room. Things have been progressing slowly...between wrong paint colors, tired arms from all the painting, other things breaking down ( thanx fridge :) ), and planning my niece's wedding...oh ya I got that going on too!

It was pretty easy to put the boards up... that went quick! I used 1x2 on the bottom above the base board molding, then spaced the 1x4 every 14 inches

topping with another 1x4

and then a 1x2 as a chair rail of sorts. Filled in the gaps with caulk, which took some time to get right.
I painted before I put the 1x4 and 1x2 on top, but it was too dark,,,

Much better! So now I am starting to paint the board and batten white. So far I have not quite half of it done....pictures to come.... and I figured out what to put above it all on the walls...I'm so excited about that and I think my daughter is going to love it!

The boards were 8 ft and I had home depot cut them in half so they are about 4 1/2 feet up the walls. I really like the 1x4s the best for the widths compared to the 1x2s. I didn't use liquid nails to put them on the walls just  2 inch brad nails because I may want to remove them someday, which the liquid nails would ruin the drywall.

This is not very expensive to do and I was surprised. I used:
10 1x4s cut in half    ($1.99 for ea full 8 ft)= $19.90
3 1x4s (8ft) for above ($1.99 ea)= $5.97
6 1x2s (8ft) for above base board and chair rail ($0.89 ea)= $5.34

So for about $32.00 a brand new look, not counting paint, which I had to buy 2 different colors! Kicking myself in the butt for that! I should have went with my gut instead of matching something!

So anyhoo.... until the reveal!!

DIY Cleaning

I've been working on my daughter's room.. I'll have pictures and details soon. I'm not sure how these other bloggers get everything done in just a couple days?! Do they have a crew like Martha Stewart or HGTV? or do they really do it themselves? All I know is that it's taking me time with some fails along the way. ha ha ha

But until I can do the reveal...here is some "recipes" I found for DIY cleaning supplies from a couple sites. I'm gonna try these ASAP!

DIY Dishwasher Soap

1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup citric acid (double if you have hard water) Can use Lemishine found next to the rinse aids at walmart **UPDATE** you can also use 2 small pkg sugear-free lemon kool-aid!!

Mix everything together and store in a plastic container. Use 1 Tablespoon per load.
Use white vinegar in your rinse aid compartment compared to the blue rinse stuff.
If you want to make pellets here's how:

Start with your DIY dishwasher detergent, and put it in a large bowl. Begin spritzing it with water and stirring the water into the detergent. Not too much water, just a little at a time. (If you get the detergent too wet it will go all volcano on you. Trust me… NOT COOL.) Get the detergent just wet enough that when you squeeze it in your hand it starts to stick together, like damp sand.

Then start scooping out 1 Tablespoon mounds. I packed mine into a mini muffin pan lined with coffee filters that I had cut into fourths. I could only fit 20 in the pan (the detergent recipe I use makes about 40 or so), so then, I lined my measuring spoon with a piece of the coffee filter and packed the detergent in to form pre-portioned little mounds in their own little wrappers. Like so…

Let them air dry for about an hour or so, and store them in something with a lid. I just used my old store bought dishwasher-detergent container, and it works well.

DIY Laundry Soap

You only need three ingredients:

1 cup Borax, 1 cup washing soda (this is different from baking soda), and a bar of soap. (most laundry-soap-maker connoisseurs recommend Fels-Naptha or Zote for the bar of soap, but I do know that some people like to use dove, or ivory because they are a softer soap.)

Here is a picture of what to look for in the store. (’cause I had no idea.)

Here is what you do:

You need to grate your bar of soap.I wanted to be sure that I could wash my stuff on cold, if I wanted, so I also ran the soap in the food processor until it was really fine. ** UPDATE** The bar is really soft and stuck to my blades...so add the dry ingredients and it turns out perfect!! Plus I lOVE this stuff!!

Then you mix 1 cup Borax and 1 cup washing soda with the grated bar of soap and put it in a container.
Mix it all up…and Voila! You have laundry soap!I did 3 batches at once and put it in this 11 cup container, and only filled it half full. The best part is you only use 1 Tbsp per load.

**UPDATE** you can also put 1/2 cup vinegar for  fabric softner!! Works great and clothes DO NOT smell like vinegar lol:)

DIY Febreeze

1/8 cup favorite fabric softener

2 Tablespoons Baking soda

Hot water to fill 32 oz febreeze bottle.

DIY Swiffer Refill

I offer Merwing-Little Dear's super-easy tutorial for making your own Swiffer duster covers! When you're done using them, toss 'em into the laundry! Now you have no excuse for not mopping and dusting! Evil, I know!

You can make them out of fleece blankets from the dollar store, or better yet, microfiber dusting cloths (yes, they sell those at the DS too!).

Anticipation

Was everyone's Holiday's festive? Mine was!! I had a family Christmas party, which turned out really good....everyone just loved it! (thanks everyone for your wonderful comments!)

So I got lots to do this weekend... take down all the Christmas decor and put away... then I have a couple of projects I want to do SOON!


1. Attack this!

My craft room! Can someone say hoarder!! Bahaaaa Just kidding!! and

2. Redoing my daughter's room.

My son lived with me for 6 months and took over her room, now he is in California, working and hanging with friends.( HI Nate!!) Now it's time to make more space in my living areas and put all her supplies and wheelchair in her room.  (she has a rare genetic disorder called Aicardi syndrome)

I want to do board and batten,

which you can get great directions here.

I think it's so cute and would look great for a little girls room. I'll be sure to take lots of pics and post when I get it done.

January is also the time that I start organizing and de-junk-ing my home and thinking about new projects for my home....But got to wait until tax refund time to pay for it....ha ha :)

Sorry all for being MIA the last week or so, but you'll soon see why....


So I've been working on the house getting ready for my family christmas party. I wanted to get the fireplace done, so I could hang the stockings with care!

This is the fireplace a few months ago after we got the original hard wood floors redone.

Not much to look at! But the last couple of weeks, in between work and everyday life i've been doing this....

And here is the completed project....

And totally decorated for the party!!

Easie peasie decorating....

I found this picture in Holiday Crafts 2011 and wanted to make them.
So I got my supplies:
2- Premade wreaths -Hobby lobby 50% off  ($9.99 reg.)
4- floral picks - Hobby Lobby 50 % off ($1.27 reg)
2- vases - already had (you can use old flower pots instead of vases!)
4- wooden skewers - already had
2- Styrofoam disks - dollar tree (2/$1.00)
floral wire - already had

So I attached the wooden skewers to the back of the wreath using the floral wire. I also added a bit of glue from my glue gun to secure placement.

I put one of the Styrofoam disks in each vase, securing with glue from glue gun.
Then stuck the two wooden skewers through the Styrofoam disks.

Then added one floral pick to each side to hang over the sides and secured with the glue gun. I also added some floral moss to hide the bit of Styrofoam showing at the bottoms.

Tied with a ribbon and DONE....Easie peasie.....SO cute!!



O christmas tree...

Here is my Christmas tree. The photo isn't very good...I guess I need classes a better camera!

The prelight 7 foot tree is in a galvanized bucket and the decorations have been collected over the past couple of years from Tai Pan. The garland was handmade this year and I will show you how to make your own in a couple days.

As you can see we are remodeling the living room and trying to live through it. I can't wait to show you the finished room.  We have completed refinishing the wood floors and tore down some of the old yucky paneling. Still working on the fireplace, hoping to have the stone on by christmas. I guess we better hurry!
